The IEEE Computer Society recently named Jiawei Han, a CCICADA researcher and Professor at the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign, as the winner of the W. Wallace McDowell Award.  This award recognizes individuals for “outstanding recent, theoretical, design, educational, practical, or other contributions that fall within the scope of Computer Society interest.”  IEEE’s acknowledgement of Dr. Han is for his research on the development of new techniques for information quality management and validation, information search and integration, and information discovery and analysis.

In his CCICADA projects, Han co-leads research that is central to the work of intelligence analysts by providing new capabilities to deal with incomplete and sometimes inconsistent information.  His work aims at providing capabilities to automatically create hypotheses that infer missing information from available data and then either validate or disprove these inferences.

The award to Dr. Han specifically recognizes his “significant contributions to knowledge discovery.”  In addition to this most recent achievement, Han has received IBM Faculty Awards, HP Innovation Award, Outstanding Contribution Award at the ICDM (2002), ACM SIGKDD Award (2004), and the IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award (2005).  He has also chaired or served on over 100 program committees of international conferences and workshops, numerous editorial boards, and he is founding Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on Knowledge Discovery from Data (TKDD).
