On June 25, 2010, Lynn Canton, FEMA Region II Administrator, and members of her staff met with CCICADA faculty and students to discuss FEMA’s role during a disaster. During her visit Ms. Canton and her team addressed what FEMA does, how it operates at the regional level, its concept of operations and consequence management, and what it brings to an emergency. During her lecture, Ms. Canton also urged students to consider a career with FEMA as a way to challenge their skills and potential while, at the same time, serving the needs of their fellow Americans.
Michael Moriarty, FEMA Deputy Regional Director, Dug Salley, Director - Disaster Operations Division, and Carri Hoffman, Acting Emergency Analyst accompanied Ms. Canton. During their visit, which was hosted by Fred Roberts, CCICADA’s Director, Canton and her team learned about CCICADA’s role in addressing Homeland Security issues and heard of the Center’s efforts specifically relevant to FEMA Region II, which includes New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The Center’s work in modeling and software development to support data analysis and collaboration for emergency response and planning is an area of mutual interest that will serve as the basis for further discussion and potential collaboration with FEMA.
